If you have a garden, you will want to protect it with garden fencing. The garden fence is useful in keeping wildlife, pets and children out of your yard. In addition, garden fences can add beauty and enjoyment to the garden.

There are many styles and kinds of garden fences. Metal, wood and plastic are some of the most common types of fencing used in gardens.

Wood fences are easy to construct and are often inexpensive. These fences do require maintenance and are subject to rot. Painted fences often need to be repainted on a regular basis. Boards and posts may require replacement on a periodic basis. In addition, it is not easy to extend wood fences underground in order to prevent burrowing animals from digging under the fence into the garden.

Metal fences may be simple or ornate. Wire fences are often very inexpensive yet effective at protecting the garden. Wire fences may extend below the level of the soil so that the burrowing animals have difficulty in digging under the fence this can prevent gophers and moles from destroying crops. In addition, it can stop rabbits and dogs from digging under the fence.

More ornate garden fences may be of wrought iron or welded panels. These garden fence panels offer a very sturdy and long lasting fence. Metal fences also require periodic maintenance, especially older fences that need to have pealing paint and rust removed periodically and repainting. Newer metal fences offer baked enamel or powder coated materials that tend to last longer without maintenance.

Some of the newest fencing material to be used for the garden is PVC fencing. This material may also be called vinyl or plastic fencing. PVC fencing is truly one of the most maintenance free materials available today. Plastic boards are bent and inserted into the channel in the top and bottom rails. The board is allowed to snap back into place and it is locked into the fence. These fences never require painting and last a long time. If a board is damaged in the fence panel, it can be snapped out and replaced easily. Over time, the fence can be subject to damage from the ultraviolet light of the sun. UV damage may cause the fence to have a powder like coating on the surface.

As you plan your garden fencing, you will also want to plan for access into the garden. Garden gates fencing can add an attractive entry into the garden. You might consider a garden trellis with a gate in the center or a trellis that offers seating in the form of two benches with the gate on one side of the trellis. The trellis is a great place to grow many different types of veining plants including climbing roses and grapes. These plants will need to be kept trimmed nicely to allow access so choose plants that do not become too aggressive.

Fences are supported with posts that are placed at equal distances along the fence. Generally, fences are supported using posts of materials that is the same as the fencing materials, i.e. wood fences on wooden posts, metal fences on metal posts and vinyl fences on vinyl posts. On occasion, you might find a metal wire fence that uses wooden posts for support, but this is generally the only exception.

Unless you are trying to keep large animals such as deer out of the garden, fences generally can be fairly short. A three to four foot fence should keep most wildlife and pets out of the garden. The advantage of shorter fence is that you can still view the garden while keeping it protected. These short fences are usually effective at keeping children outside as well.
